SWOT analysis

SWOT Analysis: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

__https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVwQNOIu808__

Strengths: Internal factors that are favorable compared with competitors, examples are strong brand loyalty, highly skilled workers. Strengths help the business achieve its objectives. Strengths need to be developed and protected.
Weaknesses: Internal factors that are unfavorable when compared with rivals, they create competitive disadvantages. Weaknesses are therefore likely to prevent or delay the business from achieving its goals. To remain competitive, the business needs to reduce or remove its weaknesses.
Opportunities: External possibilities for future development, changes in the external environment that create favorable conditions fro a business.
Threats: External factors that hinder the prospects for an organization, they cause problems for the business.

Advantages
Disadvantages
Completing a SWOT analysis can be simple.
It is rather simplistic and does not demand detailed analysis.
It has a wide range of applications.
The model is static whereas the business environment is always changing, so the shelf life of SWOT is limited.
SWOT analysis helps to determine the organization's position in the market and therefore aids the formulation of business strategy for its long term survival.
The analysis is only useful if decision-makers are open about the weaknesses and willing to act upon them.
It encourages foresight and proactive thinking and decision-making.
SWOT analysis is not typically used in isolation. Better decisions are made if more information is available, so other strategic tools are also used.
It can help reduce the risks of decision-making by demanding objective and logical thought processes.

SWOT analysis for this class:

Remember, a SWOT analysis is more than just listing internal and external factors. The next step is to analyze the factors and develop some strategies that we can implement in order to make our learning experience an enjoyable and productive one. In other words, address the following questions:
  • How can we capitalize the strengths that our team and our teacher has to offer?
  • How can we overcome some of the weaknesses that come with a second-year course?
  • How can we exploit the opportunities that a second-year course offers?
  • What might be some of the threats that come with a second-year course? What can you do to reduce those threats?
  • Review our corporate strategy.
  • Strategically plan for the next step.
  • Assess our opportunities.
  • Look at competition?
  • What is the risk?

Strengths
Weaknesses
  • Unique Selling Point
  • Brand awareness and brand loyalty
  • Market share/market dominance
  • Corporate image and reputation
  • Accreditation, endorsement or support
  • Product quality
  • Geographical location
  • Value for money
  • Limited sources of revenue
  • Escalating costs of production
  • Poor cash flow/liquidity problems
  • Higher prices than competitors
  • Demotivated or unproductive workforce
  • Limited sources of finance
  • Lack of space
  • Restricted product range
  • Location
Opportunities
Threats
  • Economic growth
  • Weakening exchange rate
  • Technological developments/innovations
  • Market growth
  • New markets or locations
  • Demographic and social lifestyle changes
  • Government spending programs
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • New entrants in the market place
  • Economic downturn (recession)
  • Inflation
  • Pressure group action or protest
  • Social, environmental or legal issues
  • Negative media coverage or publicity
  • Unfavorable changes in seasons and weather
  • Outbreak of infectious disease

SWOT Analysis for you!
  • What would you say is your greatest skill or ability?
  • Which academic subjects do you earn the best grades in? Which subjects do you struggle with?
  • What essential skills (research, social, communication, thinking, self-management) do you do best? What essential skills do you need to improve?
  • What do your friends or parents always compliment you on? What do your parents or guardians tell you need to improve upon?
  • Were you ever surprised when you were good at playing the piano or playing basketball or finishing a specific school assignment?

Operations: Ale, Samuel and Joshua
Your job: organize store, order inventory, understand stock turnover and what are our best sellers, merchandising of the store, work with marketing to give the products that are selling the best to Daniel and the marketing team in order to be promoted.
How you will do that:
  • Call Pro before snack on Monday

  • Work with Willa and Fausto to create a clear understanding of the reports from the tablet
  • Clean and organize the store on a consistent basis
  • Generate reports from the POS for the other groups (Fiance and Willa and Fausto)

Loona and Henry (separately) will create a presentation for the 12th grade and 10th grade, including activities, due in 3 weeks about motivational theories:

Unmotivated workers are Unproductive:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97efnL_xXXY

What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation?

Research these motivational theorists separately and create a joint presentation about motivation to the 12th grade business class.

Fredrick Hertzberg: Loona
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ8ap4kWPxo&spfreload=10
John Stacey Adams: Loona
Daniel Pink: Henry
Abraham Maslow: Henry

Daniel: Promotional Mix
Create a promotional event for the school that enhances the positive image of The Store.

Promotional mix: Utilizes Above the Line Promotion (ATL) and Below the Line Promotion (BTL).

Above the line promotion: is any form of paid-for promotional method through independent mass media sources to promote a business.
Below the line promotion: is the use of non-mass media promotional activities, allowing the business to have direct control. No commission has been paid to external media agencies. Branding, Slogans, Logos, Packaging, Word-of-Mouth promotion, Direct marketing, Sales promotions, Point of Sale promotion, publicity.

When deciding how to come up with a promotional mix use the acronym AIDA:
Attention: The promotional mix should raise the awareness of the product by getting the attention of existing and potential customers.
Interest: The promotional mix should stimulate and keep customers interested, perhaps by using sales promotion or a memorable and interesting slogan.
Desire: The mix should generate a desire of feeling of "need" for the product.
Action: It is vital that the promotional mix encourages customers to take action. (Buy the product, use the voucher or coupon etc.)

Look at this power point and watch the videos that are attached. Generate a clear understanding of promotional mix and the vocabulary surrounding the concept today.

Create a document that you will share with Miss Amy of your notes and connections that you can make to The Store.

Adjective list for personal profile:

In Bilingual pairs look at the adjective list and make sure that everyone knows what the words on the page mean.
Seth-Mileidy, Jordan-Ana Barbara, Reed-Ale, Daniel-Loona, Reed-Samuel, Fausto-Hazel, Martina-Henry, Mayan-Joshua

Then look at the list and choose one or two words that you would use to describe yourself and why.

Now mingle around the room until I say stop. Find a partner. Take two minutes to find a word that describes them and why. Write it on their paper. Repeat.

Using these 3-4 words write a sentence about yourself that describes you, who you are in terms of your background and experience.

Writing CVs.

Today everyone will write your personal profile. The personal profile is located at the top of the CV right under your contact details.

This will give the reader (the person that will hire you) the sense that you are talking to them even if you are not in the room. You are pointing out the highlights of your resume.

It needs to be concise.

The first sentence should describe who you are; the second sentence should present a summary of your skills and experience and the final sentence should explain your personal career target.

It should be written in the first person.

Here is my example:

I am a highly motivated, hardworking manager and trainer with 19 years retail management experience. I have worked in fast-paced, high grossing retail environments. I am seeking a position where my skills will make a positive impact on the organization and the customers being served.

Finance will go over the necessary steps to count the money. Daniel will need to decide if he is comfortable with the situation now.

Each person should have something that they do over the course of the week to move the school store forward. This is your homework. Are you working on your tasks for the store outside of class? What is your responsibility during the week?

Any questions?

12:45- 1:45: Each group will work to further their responsibilities in the school store while collaboratively making a clear to-do list that we can use in future agendas. Assignment for the day: Create a list of items that your group needs to complete in the upcoming weeks with names of people responsible and dates to be completed by.

Operations: Essential question: Which products are going to be feasible to carry in the store on an ongoing basis? What ingredients do we need? How will we buy them? When will we make them? Who will make them? How will we sell them?

Create a plan for the above questions.

How are the relationships with our vendors? Do we need to restock any of our products? Do we need any different products? Where will you find them?

How is the new inventory system working? What is working? What are some challenges?

Do we have all prices in our system? What are our margins?

Count money from this week and reconcile with the operations team's numbers.

Market research. Create a survey that the students can fill out in order to find other products that they would like to see in the store.

Working with operations, which recipes were the best for the store? What prices did you decide to charge?

How do you start the year with a store presence in our community? What do you think that they want to know or hear about your store? What have you done so far that is newsworthy? How do you communicate with your audience? (What platforms and in what way?)

Human Resources:
Your essential question: How do you give feedback to the other students in your class consistently and without bias?

Create a performance appraisal form that is for working in the school store and a performance appraisal form that is for working in groups. These need to be created in google docs and you will need to do a presentation next week to make sure everyone knows what they are going to be reviewed on.

Sept. 13:

Human Resource Management: You are responsible for developing people within a business to meet the organizational objectives.

  • Workforce management (planning and scheduling)
  • Training and developing the staff
  • Performance management and staff appraisals (feedback)
  • Making sure that employees are being treated fairly

Your assignments:

Create a schedule that utilizes everyone in the class. That means that you will have to incorporate after school hours as well.
Communicate with your teachers the change of schedule.
Communicate with your classmates about the change of schedule and make sure that it is feasible for all that are involved.
Feedback is the most important aspect of any job. It is the way that we improve and the way that we learn new things about ourselves. You guys are the management this trimester. You will be evaluating performance in class and in the store. Write performance review questions that you can share with the class so that they know what they will be evaluated on. Operations, finance and marketing will all have different specific goals to meet, so decide what those are. Your goal is to train and develop a productive staff.

Operations: Your role in the store is providing the right goods and services in the right quantities and at the right quality level in a cost-effective and timely manner.

  • Keeping a reliable inventory to help with ordering the correct amount of product on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain positive relations with your outside vendors.
  • Ordering new product.
  • Having the money ready and the order ready on a weekly basis for your vendors.
  • Providing new and innovative ideas for product and delivery methods.

Your assignments:

On the product spreadsheets compare cost and price of our product. Prepare to discuss with your class any price changes you believe necessary. Make sure that our price is clearly written on the spreadsheets so that everyone knows the prices that we sell our merchandise.
Look at our mission statements that we developed last week, brainstorm a list of new products that you believe that we can sell in the store.
Work on "sourcing" these products (figuring out if it is feasible to have them in the store.)
Find a solution to our inventory tracking system. Research all Point of Sale Systems that you think are viable for our store and recommend a course of action to the rest of the class. (What materials will we need, how can we train people on the system, how expensive is it, etc.)
Create a list of phone numbers of your vendors and dates that they will come to our store. Schedule a staff member to be ready to meet them or order the correct products from them.

Marketing: Your role in the store is to communicate effectively (and respectfully) with the customers and potential customers of the school store. You are here to make the customers want to buy the products of our business.

  • Set clear organizational objectives that can be communicated internally and externally. They should also reflect the strategy of the organization.
  • Communicate with the community and inform them of our products.
  • Create new opportunities to sell product throughout the trimester.
  • Use creative ways to promote our products and brand throughout the community.

Your assignments:

Finalize our mission statement and store name. Make sure that our objectives match what the class believes in. Then publicize it to the broader community.
Identify new products that will be sold in the store. Create a market research survey for the parents and the Chirripo campus and the Arenal campus. What do each of these different consumers want and need? How will you provide that?
Create opportunities for your class to sell outside of the 15 minutes of snack. How do you make sure that it is fair?
Make sure that there is an adequate and effective promotion to convince customers to buy your product.
Utilize Facebook, Instagram, Weekly Update to inform customers of our products.

Finance: All business need money to finance their various activities and we are not any different. We need money for day to day activities, such as paying our suppliers and we need money to invest in new equipment or the aesthetics of the store.

  • Keep track of all money that comes in and out of the store by maintaining spreadsheets of daily income and of purchases.
  • Approve all large spending by generating a breakeven analysis. (I will teach you this.)
  • Maintain the "bank" with clear rules and regulations that you will create.
  • Present your accounting to the board of directors at the end of the trimester.

Your assignments:

Create a spreadsheet that shows daily income of store, monthly income of store and trimester income of store.
Create a spreadsheet that shows daily expenditures of the store.
Create a spreadsheet and accounting system for the "bank" of the store.
Create policies and procedures that will keep the money safe and secure during the trimester.
Train the rest of the class on the new policies and procedures.

Sept 7:

Content objective: Students will be able to define and analyze mission statements and vision statements of different companies and then write one for their store.

Vocabulary objective:
Mission Statement: A simple declaration of the underlying purpose of an organization's existence and its core values. (What is our business?)

Vision Statement: An outline of an organization's aspirations (where it wants to be) in the distant future.

Look at the Vision and Mission Statements that have been posted around the room. Please get up and read them.

Choose one that resonates with you.

Write: Why did you choose this mission/vision statement? What words stood out to you in the text? Why?

Talk about your ideas with your partner. Then we will share as a class.

Writing a mission statement for our store:

Just as important as the mission statement is the process of writing the statement. This process helps a new or established business clarify questions such as:
  • What business are we really in?
  • What type of business do we want to be?
  • What is our target market?
  • What inspires us?
The writing process and the statement both provide clarity of purpose and motivation for business success.

Mission Statement Characteristics

A mission statement has the following key characteristics:
  • Visionary. Above all else, a mission statement offers a vision of what a business aspires to be. A visionary mission statement helps people understand what the business is about and how they can contribute to the achievement of the vision. Mission statements frequently contain wording such as “to be the best,” “the highest quality,” and “in the world.”
  • Broad. A company cannot be all things to all people, but a mission statement should not limit a company’s area of service or expertise too narrowly. Especially in the fast-paced world of e-commerce, customer needs, as well as customers, can change rapidly. A mission statement should be broad enough to allow the company to meet those needs without annual revisions of the statement. For example, the original mission of Classmates.com was to reunite classmates in American high schools. However, the business quickly found a market in colleges and universities as well, and then the military and the workplace. Soon Classmates.com found it was not in the classmates business, but rather in the personal networking business. CEO Michael Schutzer acknowledges that he would choose another name, and a broader mission, had he started the business today. “Our business is more than high school reunions,” he says. “It is a personal network for reconnecting people” (//Source:// Tom Taulli, “Dot-com Content That Works?” //CNETNews.com//, April 18, 2002).
  • Realistic. The broad vision needs to be tempered with realism so that it is both practical and workable. Mission statements that include everything or overpromise will not give a clear indication of what the business is about. A lofty, unrealistic mission statement will not have great credibility. Instead, the best statements are direct and powerful. For example, in October 2002 Microsoft changed its mission statement from “To empower people through great software—any time, any place, and on any device” to “To help people and businesses throughout the world realize their full potential.” The new mission statement is certainly broad enough, but is it realistic? Does it overpromise? Does it give any indication of what Microsoft is about? Most mission statement writers would think the new mission statement is a step backward, using the criteria listed here.
  • Motivational. You should write the statement in such a way that it inspires commitment among employees, customers, partners, and funding agencies about what this company will do or produce. Some organizations emphasize the inspirational value of their mission statement above all else, using it to express the company’s philosophy and values.
  • Short and concise. The mission statement should be no longer than 25 words. Some consultants recommend that the mission statement be short enough that an employee can easily remember it and readily repeat it. Similarly, the late management guru Peter Drucker suggested it should be able to fit on a T-shirt.
  • Easily understood. The statement should use plain language that is convincing and easy to understand. For example, a technology company’s mission statement should not include jargon or technology concepts that are unfamiliar to people outside the area. Consider using the “grandmother test” on your mission statement—would your grandmother understand what your company is about if she read your mission statement?
Purma Top Gift’s mission statement reflects most, if not all, of these characteristics: “The mission of Purma Top Gifts is to be the world’s premier retailer of top-quality Purma-made gifts and souvenirs.”
http://wps.prenhall.com/bp_turban_introec_3/167/42819/10961828.cw/index.html

A good place to start is with the vision part of the statement. In a brainstorming session, conduct the following exercises to clarify what you and others want the business to be:
  • List 5 to 10 words or phrases that describe your business. Highlight the three most important.
  • List three to five words or phrases that describe the company’s ideal image from a customer’s point of view.
  • List three to five words or phrases that describe the company’s ideal image from a management and employee point-of-view.
Temper this vision with a focus on the purpose of the business:
  • List the market opportunities and/or customer needs that your company intends to address (e.g., the business’s value proposition).
  • Who are your customers? List the company’s primary and secondary target markets.
  • With your customers in mind, list each service or product your business will provide.
  • List three to five measures of your business’s success.
These exercises will provide you with the raw material necessary to write a mission statement and other parts of the e-business plan, as the parenthetical comments suggest.

Now that you have words and phrases from the group, the homework is to each write a mission statement for the store and we will work together to choose one next week that all the members of the class agree upon.
